Merck ranks 40th on the list of minority students' preferred employers; why do you think it is so attractive to students of color?
Merck has a strong reputation in the college marketplace. Because of our hiring results and longstanding relationships with key organizations like Black and Hispanic MBA organizations, as well as NSBE [National Society of Black Engineers], SHPE [Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers], and AISES [The American Indian Science and Engineering Society], we continue to attract the best and brightest from these sources.
How would you say that a diverse workforce is important for Merck's success?
Valuing diversity is consistent with a 21st-century company that relies on innovation to develop breakthrough medicines. At Merck, we value the diversity of our workforce because it ignites innovation and offers opportunity for different perspectives to collaborate on business solutions. We need to be reflective of the current and future marketplace in which we operate. But it's not something that we do off to the side. We approach diversity as an integrated part of our HR and business practices.
What would students find most surprising about working for Merck?
I think that students will find that we are serious about embracing all cultures and abilities within the organization. Deborah Dagit, who is our Executive Director of Diversity & Work Life, has implemented several significant processes and programs in the organization; for example, she sponsored a program called Microinequities, where employees can learn about all the ways in which we communicate powerful nonverbal messages, and how to be conscious of the messages we send, receive, and observe that impact inclusion and teamwork.
What is it like for new recruits fresh out of school when they come to work for Merck?
Merck takes extra care to hire, develop, retain, and attract highly capable and motivated individuals, and really provides a strong foundation for developing one's professional skills. For diverse candidates, it's no different than for anyone else-we are a company that embraces diversity, and ensures fairness and access for everyone to developmental opportunities.
If you were to highlight one competence or strength that Merck works to develop in its employees, what would it be?
Leadership. We have a corporate leadership model with Leadership Principles. Leadership is emphasized on multiple levels in multiple ways. It's not only at the management level-we expect leadership from all Merck employees. It's important that every employee at Merck feels challenged, valued, and capable of making a difference.
How would you complete this sentence: People who succeed at Merck are...?
Thought leaders, team players, and innovators. They care about making great medicine for all people.
And how does this impact the corporate culture?
I think that it makes it a great place to work.
