Incubators provide ideal space to hatch a business

SYRACUSE--Looking for a place to grow your business? Why not try a business incubator?

No, a business incubator is not a warm and humid spot for growing baby chicks. Incubators help fledgling companies cut start-up costs by offering them shared clerical, accounting, and consulting services in a jointly occupied building.

The concept is growing rapidly in popularity and importance. The latest figures from the National Business Incubation Association (NBIA) show that in the last 12 years, their number has increased 30-fold, and, on average, a new incubator becomes operational each week.

New York is definitely part of the trend. Edward Foote, of Alfred Technology Resources, Inc. in Alfred, is the president of the newly formed New York Business Incubation Association.

Central New York has a number of incubators. They're located in Oswego, Utica, Syracuse, and Phoenix, among other places. Here's a list of incubators around the state, along with the telephone number of someone to contact in case you're interested in following up.
