Sorensen Paperboard closes Michigan mill

Pulp & Paper, Sep 2003

The decline in the U.S. manufacturing, combined with higher energy and fiber costs, led to the permanent shutdown of the Sorenson Paperboard Corp. mill in Palmyra, Mich., after being in business for more than 40 years. The mill produced plain and white-lined recycled chipboard for tubes, drums, pads, and partitions. Daily production was 70-80 tons, or 25,000 tpy, on a single Beloit six-cylinder paper machine.

One of the mill's previous owners was Paperboard Industries Inc., which purchased the mill from Big M Paperboard Inc. in 1986 for $1.1 million and sold it in 1991 to the current owner Merritt Sorensen, the former vice president and general manager of the facility.
