In a bid to expand its U.S. sales through Wal-Mart, Kruger Inc. has confirmed the startup of the new tissue machine at its Scott Paper mill in Crabtree, Que. The new Crescent former Metso Paper machine will have the capacity to produce 30,000 mtpy of bathroom tissue.

Prior to the startup, Crabtree had the capacity to produce 70,000 mtpy of tissue and towels on five machines. It also has a 110,000-mtpy deinking plant, with enough capacity to support the new machine. The new machine will enable Scott Paper to better serve both the Canadian market (where it has an estimated 30% market share) and expand its position in the U.S. market. The latter will mainly be from the exclusive sale of the company's White Cloud brand through Wal-Mart USA.

The C$116.4-million program announced one year ago also includes the addition of a wet end to the No. 5 paper machine in Lennoxville, Que.
