MAINTANINING MILLS
Pulp & Paper, Aug 2005
Although capital expenditures are showing a steep rise compared with 2004, companies still are operating their assets longer before replacing them. Producers rely on the suppliers increasingly to deliver solutions that will help them realize these goals. While older machines may be shut, other machines producing commodity grades are converted to produce value-added grades, making proper maintenance more critical than ever. This special section highlights products and services available to mill maintenance teams for keeping equipment operating at peak efficiency.
Severe-duty motors
Baldor offers customers a wide range of severe-duty motors, including premium or standard efficiencies. For most extreme applications where downtime is critical, Baldor IEEE 841 motors are ideal and feature cast-iron construction for extra durability and are designed for a wide range of processing industry conditions. They are built with Class F insulation, Class B temperature rise, and a 1.15 service factor. Motors through 575 volts use ISR Inverter Spike-Resistant wire, and IEEE 841 motors add Inpro/Seal bearing isolators on each end of the motor.

Premium efficient motors
Baldor announces improvements to the efficiency ratings and overall performance of the Baldor Super-E line of premium efficient motors. Originally introduced in 1983, the Super-E motors have consistently delivered some of the motor industry's highest efficiencies and energy savings. With the latest improvements Super-E motors will now provide even greater energy savings and faster paybacks. Baldor has raised the efficiency level of over 125 individual ratings, and some now exceed 96%.

Cartridge conversion kit
Deublin offers a conversion kit for seals of Beloit duplex steam joints fitted on to rotating siphon installations. Although rotating siphons for dryer drainage might be perfectly suitable, mechanical maintenance might be an issue with the existing steam joint. A pair of seal cartridges is available that retrofits into the existing steam joint body without requiring replacement of the adaptive hardware. The seal cartridges are packaged inside carriers and are secured into the existing steam joint body using six socket head cap screws.

Water unions for calender stacks
The 6000 Series water unions feature Deublin's "Cartridge Seal" design allowing on-the-machine replacement of seals. Repairs can be conducted by removing the hex bolts and end cap, then removing the cartridge seal and rotor seal face, and replacing with new seals. The 6000 Series rotating unions feature: balanced mechanical seal with carbon against tungsten carbide seal faces for reduced friction & wear; ELS version with silicon carbide against tungsten carbide seals for abrasive environment.

Water union for press rolls
Deublin FC100 3-passage water union for press rolls provides efficient, trouble-free and uniform cooling. The FC100 is based on an innovative three separate passage design. The first passage is for induction of cooling water and ends in two spray heads that distribute water to uniformly cool the entire length of the roll. The second passage controls air flow that provides the minimal differential pressure required to evacuate the spent water. The water exits through the third passage.
