50 years; On May 4,1956, the Atomic Energy Commission authorized for the first time the building of private, rather than government-funded, nuclear powerplants. Subsequently, the first new plant was built by Consolidated Edison Company of New York at Indian Point.

20 years: On June 1, 1986, the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, the United States' emergency reserve, reached the half-billion-barrel mark. The planned capacity of the reserve is 750 million barrels. After Hurricane Katrina, the reserve released 20.8 million barrels of oil for sale in response to the oil shortage.
