Pickerman's Soup & Sandwiches has opened at 327 Jay St. in downtown La Crosse.

Jim and Sharon Cullmann of West Salem, Wis., recently purchased a franchise from the Pickerman's chain, which is based in Cedar Falls, Iowa. They say the restaurants sell distinctive soups, sandwiches and salads. The La Crosse restaurant opened Oct. 24.

"My wife and I have always wanted to do some thing together," says Jim, who continues to own and operate Cullmann Brothers Painting in West Salem. "Her family has a restaurant background. Sharon recently left the banking industry after 18 years for the couple's new restaurant business.

Pickerman's has a variety of sandwiches - the bread is baked at the restaurant and offers five different soups each day. Besides those, Pickerman's features chili, beef stew and clam chowder every day, and beverages such as soda, beer and wine. Sharon says the roast beef, ham and swiss, and Numero Uno are among the most popular sandwiches.

Hours are from 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. The phone number is (608) 782-7087.
