April building permit activity

Building construction resumed its upbeat performance in April after a one-month lapse into the doldrums during March.

The nine reporting cities in the Coachella Valley came up with a $31,542,704 logging compared to $21,161,065 for April of 1993--a 49 percent gain.

During March, building permit valuations dropped 17.4 percent after gains of 58 percent in February and 4.7 percent in January. Leading the resurgence was Indio, which got a $7,729,246 lift from the issuance of a permit for 18 buildings in a multi-family apartment complex: this push Indio to a $9,218,578 total for the month.

Indio also issued permits for 14 homes for a valuation of $1,220,399. La Quinta topped on Valley cities with permits for 24 homes for a valuation of $4,792,101 while Cathedral City, normally a Valley leader in single-family homes. toted up $2,964,935 for 23 homes. Single-family homes accounted for 42.9 percent of the nine Valley cities total valuation.

Palm Desert wound up in second place in the Valley building picture with a $5,619,816 total; La Quinta was third with $5,421,907; Cathedral City was the fourth place with #3,811,684 and Palm Springs fifth with $3,247,299.

Permits were issued throughout the Valley for 83 single-family homes for a total of $13,544,394.
