Noise abatement program proves to be costly

Public Record, The, Aug 14, 1998

PALM SPRINGS -- A noise abatement program to prepare for the advent of the extended runway at the Palm Springs Regional Airport is proving to be a costly undertaking.

In addition to spending from $9 to $10 million on construction changes, and insulating the homes in or near the flight path, the city will have to ask the FFA for another $981,000 to install a monitoring system for noise.

Thus far, 115 applications have been received from homeowners for the sound improvements but there is only enough money available at this time to do 80 homes.

Several homeowners objected strenuously to the runway extension and won a commitment from the Airport Commission to set up an ongoing study of airport noise, according to Barry Griffith, maintenance and environmental affairs manager at the port.
