Technological treks: Teacher First
Teaching Pre K-8, Oct 1994 by Allen, Denise
Teachers are first with Jostens. No, this isn't geography, but you just have to hear about this new Jostens courseware now. As we all know, keeping students' attention has become increasingly difficult. We have to compete with the multimedia world students live in. Many students have access to their own video machines, hand-held computer game devices, etc. It's no wonder sitting passively in school no longer suffices.
Jostens definitely had this in mind when they created Teacher First. This courseware for K-6 math, reading and language arts helps you compete with the multimedia world. Components include full-motion video, sound, animation, text and graphics in a format that entices students. Armed with a computer that has video and a simple point-and-click presentation, this adds a new dimension to your class. You have full control; you can stop and start discussions, emphasize key points, reinforce concepts and customize lessons.
The courseware fits any teacher's lesson plans and correlates with basal texts and standardized tests. Of course, the math program reflects the NCTM standards. The teacher's guide and on-line help offer answers to any questions you pose.
The content is very lively and actively involves students. The songs are zippy and have some interesting rap. Students also enjoy the option of being on screen themselves in a video-based presentation that teachers can access through the capture and edit feature. If you're ready for some help in your current method of delivery, take a look at Jostens.
