February is the month for multicultural studies and famous birthdays. Use these sites to celebrate Black history, the 40th birthday of The Cat in the Hat, and the XVIII Winter Olympics.

Help the Cat in the Hat celebrate his 40th birthday with activities at this site. For every card the Cat receives, Random House will donate a book to the National Center for Family Literacy. Bake a hat-shaped birthday cake, email the Cat, join the celebrations around the country. Enter the Trivia Contest, play one of the interactive games or print out a game to play off line, or find out more about Dr. Seuss. New activities each month on a new book theme. All the Dr. Seuss characters are here with themed activities for the featured books each month. Try a hat day for the Cat's 40th birthday or a poem book for the 60th birthday of To Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street. A collection of Internet-based lessons that provides opportunities for students to explore African American issues. Each African American activity includes directions and questions to guide research as students explore a variety of resources from the Internet. Activities focus on Black History Month, slavery, African American leaders, contemporary poetry, and oral history. The African American Mosaic link at the Library of Congress is an extensive guide for the study of Black History and culture. The Mosaic can be divided by topic for small research groups. Links to the 9th Cavalry provide insights into what life was like for African American soldiers during the Civil War. A Treasure Hunt is also available which can be used as an overview for Black History Month.
