Teaching Pre K-8, May 2000
The Heart of the Matter... really gets to the heart of the matter? Young People's Healthy Heart Lesson Plans are a must for every classroom in every school in this country.
Mercy Hospital in North Dakota has a super kit that will change lifestyles and start kids off on the right foot- literally. A component of this program is exercise which can be done at home. The scope and sequence chart covers grades K-6 and lists the areas of heart study, with separate columns for exercise and nutrition. Under each of these two heads there is a column for skills/knowledge and behavior change. Behavior change is further separated into two columns covering school activity and home activity.
That's only part of this kit: there's a great puppet - Heart Buddy - and test tubes! Yes, test tubes to measure fat, salt and sugar in foods.
The teacher's guides (one for each grade level) target behavior change using super activities, worksheets and resources. The kids will absolutely love knowing how much fat is in a small portion of McDonald's fries and how much sugar is in a can of pop.
We have to say this program is irresistible - in more ways than one. Although the whole package costs $319.40 plus 10% s/h, you can buy the various items separately. Just check the website for information. This material is really not an option if we're concerned about the whole child

A New One... or rather new ones, from Stokes Publishing. We saw these books at a conference and loved them. Clever Calculator Cat is an 8 1/2 x 11, 32-page story...which sends kids to their calculators to check facts! The story is neat and the calculator questions are great. You can buy just the book for $8.50, or buy th the book with a Teacher Resource Book for $19.95.
The other item we loved was the book, The Tortoise Who Bragged- A Chinese Tale with Trigrams. You can buy just the book, ($8.50) or the book with the Trigram Puzzle ($12.95). There's s/h on these.
