Midmath...

Teaching Pre K-8, Mar 2002 by Broderick, Patricia, Raymond, Allen

Midmath... was a name with which we weren't familiar, that is until we met Dr. Ellen Heckler at the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics convention last spring. Dr. Heckler told us about her line of math products and offered to send them for review possibility. We're glad she did.

Although we can't tell you about all of them, (there are books and games) we would like to tell you about Real-Life Experiences Using Classified Ads: For Grades 5-High School. This 66-page, 8 1/2" x 11" paperbound book provides lots of fun activities and lots of learning. There are approximate time frames for the various activities. Students "select" a job from the newspaper classified section and give their reasons why they want the job. Then, they must present their qualifications. From there they work out monthly budgets, whether or not they can afford a car, an apartment and so on. They even have to do comparison shopping for food,, planning on using coupons.

Masters for all types of budget worksheets are also included. It seems that this is the most valuable real-life vehicle for learning that could be provided to children. And, best of all, the learning is across the curriculum.

Dr. Hechler has created games in the mental math area, flashcards for grades three to ten, an addition and subtraction series. There's even a Spanish version of Mental Math for all grades. Ask for her descriptive catalog sheet.
