Teaching Pre K-8, Aug/Sep 2002 by Broderick, Patricia, Raymond, Allen
We were exhibiting next to a fascinating company about which we thought you'd like to know. It's called Wholemovement Geometry. This is not a big company, but it certainly attracted the crowds. A very manipulative approach to understanding the spatial nature of the circle is what it's all about.
Bradford Hansen-Smith had models constructed from paper plates and had two of his books for sale. Higherorder thinking skills, problem-solving activities... all are enhanced by these activities. And Brad has tied in these movement patterns to Language Arts, Social Studies and Science. All kids (even big kids) will be hooked by the "aha" experiences in working with these plates.
The 220-page book The Geometry of Wholemovement - Folding the Cir- cle for Information is organized into four parts, with folding activities appropriate to each. Part One covers folding the circle into a 3-6 pattern and the four frequency diameter circle and the eight frequency diameter circle; Part Two covers folding the circle into a 4-8 pattern; Part Three includes folding the circle into a five-ten pattern. Part Four covers Documentation, and has a great bibliography. This book is $30 plus $5 s/h; a great investment you and your kids will find fascinating.
There's also The Hands-on Marvelous Ball Book authored by Brad. Write for more information and visit his website brad@synasoft.com
