News and Grants for Teaching Professionals

IN BRIEF

In honor of the bicentennial of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, the award-winning Space Day educational initiative is offering a variety of educational programs to ignite the imaginations of 21st century space explorers, scientists and inventors. Space Day 2004, "Blazing Galactic Trails," provides educational programs and activities a year long, culminating in a global celebration on May 6, 2004.

The Space Day Design Challenges, designed by the Challenger Center for Space Science Education, will encourage young people to utilize the same qualities of resourcefulness and determination embodied by the legendary explorers of the American West. This year's Space Day Design Challenges that will be offered to grades four through eight include: Space Trek (create an electronic journal chronicling their expedition); Galactic Gear (build a multipurpose tool that can be used to explore and/or survive in our solar system) and Extreme Explorer (build a vehicle to help explore a region of the solar system).

Design Challenges teams that submit solutions by March 5, 2004 will receive a certificate of appreciation signed by Senator John Glenn, co-chair of Space Day. Judging will take place in March and 21 "stellar" teams will be honored at the Space Day Opening Ceremony in Washington, D.C. on May 6, 2004.
