SPECIAL SECTION: Getting Parents Involved

Teaching Pre K-8, Mar 2005 by Meagher, Sandy

My own four children always enjoyed art and craft projects at home. I would have loved to have owned the book Look What You Can Make With Dozens of Household Items, edited by Kathy Ross (Boyds Mills Press, 2002, ISBN 1-59078-058-2). Using throwaway items and ordinary household supplies, you can make hundreds of things for school projects, holidays or just for fun. A good match with this book is Recycled Crafts Box by Laura C. Martin (Storey Kids, 2004, ISBN 1-580-17522-8).

Drawing books are always hot items. Check out 1-2-3 Draw Cars, Trucks, and Other Vehicles by Freddie Levin (Peel Productions, 2002, ISBN 0-939-21744-9).

A favorite of so many is origami. A really nice book that comes with its own real origami paper is Beginners Origami Metropolitan Museum of Art, (Viking Press, 2003, ISBN 0-670-03648-X).

Each of us can be a part of this artistic process in our children and students.
