Child care counts honor roll for Vermont Employers: Ted Childs
Vermont Business Magazine, Feb 01, 1999
So much has JT (Ted) Childs, Jr done to help working parents and families that in 1997 he was named one of 25 male Friends of the Family by Working Mother magazine -- in recognition of his efforts to make it easier for working parents to raise and nurture children.
Childs is IBM's vice president of Global Workforce Diversity; he has worldwide responsibility for the company's diversity programs and policies.
Childs will be the keynote speaker at the Child CareCounts Honor Roll luncheon on February 5 at the Sheraton Burlington Conference Center. Also speaking will be Molly Lambert, Vermont's Secretary of Commerce and Community Development.
Childs is a 1967 graduate of West Virginia State College, where he is now a member of the board of directors and a past president of the West Virginia State College Foundation.
In 1982 and 1983, Childs served as executive assistant to Dr Benjamin L Hooks, executive director of the NAACP, on an IBM Social Service Leave.
He is also a member of the Executive Leadership Council, the American Society on Aging Business Forum, the Conference Board's Work and Family Council, and the Work Force Diversity Council. He is a member of the American Business Collaboration Board of Champions and on the board of directors of the American Association of People with Disabilities.
In 1989, Childs was appointed by Governor Mario Cuomo to the New York State Governor's Advisory Council on Child Care.
In May 1992, he was named co-chair of the National Council of Jewish Women's Work Family Advisory Board. In November of that year, the organization presented him with their Founder's Award for his commitment to quality-of-life issues for America's families.
Nationally, in 1995 Childs was appointed an official delegate to the White House Conference on Aging, and in 1996 he was invited by Vice President Albert Gore to serve on the eight-person planning team for the 1996 Family ReUnion "V" which the Vice President and Mrs Gore hosted in Nashville, TN.
It was in recognition of these many achievements that Working Mother recognized Childs as a "Friend of the Family."
In February of 1998, the National Association of Child Care Resource and Referral Agencies presented Childs with its Lifetime Achievement Award.
Childs' career has been so varied that he also holds life memberships in the NAACP, the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc, the National Organization of Women, the Sierra Club, and the Bass Anglers Sportsmen Society.
