Bathed in character

A few special details make a big bathroom even better. For this Texassize master bath, Dallas architect Stephen Chambers repeated the craftsmanship and old-world character that embellish other rooms of the new ranch house near Waxahachie.
Stephen placed the tub in the 9 1/2- x 17foot room's recessed bay, surrounded by tall windows with thick reveals. Wideblade venetian blinds are set within the deep windowsills for privacy.
Hardware is an appealing mix of rough and refined finishes. Towel racks and drawer pulls are crafted of wrought iron. Designer Phyllis Ransopher-Nottingham incorporated bath accessories crafted of polished pewter to complement the brushed pewter tub and sink fixtures.
Simple lines and carpenter details enliven the his-and-her vanities. A carved, wooden frame with a beveled mirror provides an attractive alternative to a flush, wall-mounted mirror. Sconces set above the framed mirror augment the room's wonderful play of sunlight.
Generous counters provide space for decorative touches. An antique porcelain pitcher and washbowl sit as a reminder of the olden days. Over the tub, a simple wrought iron bracket supports an oldfashioned lantern that now serves as a planter. It's the ideal finishing touch, and the perfect perch for any plant that loves sunshine and humidity.
