Decorating step-by-step

Southern Living, Oct 2000

Simple glass containers for flowers and candles are as common as drinking cups. So how do you spice them up for a different look each time you entertain?

We found an easy solution: gold mesh screen. Lightweight, pliable, and water-- resistant, the screen works wonders, giving new life to an old idea. It glimmers beautifully in soft candlelight and can hide unsightly scratches, poor-quality glass, and the dated lines of inexpensive containers.

Basic tools are used to cut and form the screen, which can be shaped by hand. However, because the raw edge of the mesh will scratch and pierce, it's a good idea to wear garden gloves. Follow these simple steps, and you can brighten your home with a sea of golden light surrounding elegant containers of flowers.

Step 1: Unroll the screen approximately 1 foot. Measure the appropriate size by placing the container in the center of the unrolled portion. Bring the two loose edges up to the top of the container, leaving a few extra inches on the sides. Unroll additional screen, so once cut, the screen will complEtely wrap around the container. Note: Most 2-inch votive holders will use a 6-inch square of screen.

Step 2: Cut the square. Fold over the cut edges 1/4 to 1/2 inch to make the sides manageable. Use the pliers to guide the fold, which removes the prickly edges. Precut a piece of wire long enough to tie around the neck or mouth of your container.

Step 3: Place the container in the center of the screen. Bring each edge toward the top of the container until you can squeeze all four sides around its mouth. Holding the screen in place with one hand, wrap the wire around the screen and mouth of the container. Tie it off to secure in place.

Step 4: Fold the four edges back so the container's mouth is open. Because the screen is secured, the mesh can be molded until it evenly covers the container. Try cutting different decorative edges. And if using candles, always remember to keep the edges away from the flame.

Rocky Springs is a classic example of the traditional Southern home. Its long front porch offers the perfect place to enjoy evening breezes. Inside, a spacious foyer welcomes you, leading into the dining and family rooms.

The inviting family room features built-in bookcases and a fireplace. Multiple windows and doors create an open, airy feel. Connected to the kitchen and room, the living areas provide ample space for family gatherings.

The large master bedroom tucks away off the kitchen on the front of the house. The master bedroom has a bath that includes a garden tub, separate shower, his-and-her vanities, and a walk-in closet.

Upstairs, two bedrooms share a bath, and the third connects to a private one. A built-in computer work station is just off the balcony that overlooks the family room. Bonus space above the garage would make a great rec room.
