Kentucky handmade furniture

Southern Living, Apr 2002

When Ralph Jordan passes his hands over a smooth piece of finished woodwork, it's as if he's connecting with an old friend. The master craftsman has fashioned fine walnut and cherry furniture for more than 50 years. Visit Ralph's showroom and workshop in Auburn, Kentucky, to see the quality of his relationship with wood and to purchase his creations.

The line of furniture gets its style from past traditions. Ralph built his reputation on copying antiques. "Our furniture fits in old-style homes," Ralph says. "We work with Shaker, Early American, and Southern styles."

The 73-year-old started a furniture-- refinishing shop after World War II. "We repaired antiques at first; then we created variations on the antiques," he says. Those variations have become more sophisticated with each passing decade. You'll find walnut highboys, pretty cherry wishbone dressers, elaborate four-poster beds with bow canopies, and handsome game tables.

Colonial House is a family affair. "Our son, Larry, is in charge of manufacturing," Ralph says. His daughter, Carolyn, is now in charge of the office.

The Jordans take pride in all the family aspects of their business because they know that their work is destined to become a part of your family's heirlooms.
