Fabulous frames

Southern Living,  Jul 2002

Use colorful paper and wallpaper scraps to enhance picture matting.

Just about any kind of wallpaper lends itself to this method of personalized picture framing. Creating a custom look is easy, and making decorative mats for prints and drawings is a perfect use for leftover wallcovering. The wallpaper should complement the framed image, without overpowering it. Covering mats in wallpaper is a simple way to unite a collection of various prints as well as frame a series of similar images.

For the best results, have a frame shop apply the wallpaper to the mats. You can then complete the framing yourself by inserting the mats and artwork into the frames.

Step 1: Choose a ready-made picture frame, or have a custom one constructed.

Step 2: Have the framer dry-- mount (attach under heat and pressure) wallpaper to a piece of mat board cut to fit within the frame. (If wallpaper is striped, make sure that lines run parallel to the edge of the board and that design is centered.)

Step 3: Have an opening in mat cut to fit the print, and then finish the project yourself Follow the framer's instructions for inserting the glass, mat, and print as well as attaching the paper backing and hardware. *
