From orchard to table

Southern Living,  Jul 2002  by Brown, Cybil A

This time of year, peaches take the lead in an array of fabulous recipes.

After the last school bell of the year rang, I would always head to Fort Valley, Georgia, to spend the summer with my grandparents. Once I arrived at their home in Peach County, I couldn't wait to take that first bite into a sweet, juicy peach. I've never lost that sense of anticipation.

I admit a fierce loyalty to Georgia peaches, but I've been known to swoon over those grown elsewhere in the South too. I've even come to love newer types, such as the white-fleshed Charity Belle.

If you're like me, you might be tempted to start snacking on a purchase of locally grown goodness before you get it home from the farm or market. Just be sure to save some for our delicious dishes.
