Jackson's Old Capitol Inn

Southern Living, Aug 2002 by Lange, Courtney

Despite the stodgy name, this new hotel is a hip addition to Mississippi.

I have not yet stepped inside, but my conclusions are drawn. The building's redbrick face, framed by two gas lanterns, tells me that the Old Capitol Inn is your typical Victorian B&B. I begin to wonder if my bathtub will have claw feet and if my four-poster rice bed will be dressed in an eyelet or a less formal quilt. What I discover inside, though, is actually a modern stay blessed with heaps of history.

Few hotels celebrate Mississippi like the Old Capitol Inn. Former home to the town's YWCA, the building has undergone a complete interior makeover and now undoubtedly serves as one of the state's finest and most fashionable inns.

Each of the 24 Mississippi-themed guestrooms boasts a distinct personality. Faulkner's Flat features a 6--foot-- high book-cover headboard, and the walls of the Walter Anderson room (a favorite of guests) are lined with his works. Other suites have such names as Windsor's Legacy, Ponder Heart, and Beauvoir. All rooms have televisions and data-port telephones, and five come with whirlpools.

The Rooftop Garden, open to all guests, sports a larger whirlpool and overlooks the city. From here you can see the Old Capitol Museum and the current state capitol building, both of which lie within walking distance of the inn.

Conveniently located in the heart of downtown Jackson, the Old Capitol Inn has become a popular and affordable place for guests and locals to enjoy lunch. (Prices range from $7.95 to $9.95.) The dining room opens onto the trellis and garden. Step outside to find a swimming pool along with bubbling fountains and a small bridge-covered pond.

The menu, which is limited but delightful, changes almost weekly. Lunch is served with fresh bread and a to-die-for artichoke-cheese spread (I couldn't pry the recipe out of them) that alone is worth the visit.
