Charming Charleston
Southern Living, Jan 2003
Take our tips for a special stay in this lovely city.
Need some help in planning or dropping a hint about a romantic getaway? Here's the first step: Choose Charleston, South Carolina. We've compiled a can't-miss list of where to stay dine, and dally around.
Stay: One of the newest and nicest kids on the block is the French Quarter Inn, located at the intersection of Church and Market Streets. Ask for a truly unforgettable room with a balcony overlooking the historic district. French Quarter Inn: toll free 1-866-812-1900 or www.fqicharleston.com. Rates: $199-$259 for a deluxe inn room.
Dine: One of the hottest places to dine is the Cypress Lowcountry Grille, tucked on East Bay Street. Their hickory-grilled wahoo ($26) is woo hoo. Cypress Lowcountry Grille: (843) 727-0111. Entrees: $18-$36; reservations are suggested.
Shop: The Historic Charleston Foundation has two must-see stores-The Historic Charleston Foundation Reproduction Shop and the Museum Shop. You'll find reproductions of furniture, home and garden accessories, books, jewelry, and other items, many of which are licensed by the foundation. Reproduction Shop: 105 Broad Street, at the corner of Broad and King; (843) 723-8292. Museum Shop: 108 Meeting Street, across from the Mills House; (843) 724-8484 or www.historiccharleston.org.
Stroll: Start out on a main avenue, such as King or Meeting Street; then turn down a side street (among our favorites are Ladson and Lamboll Streets, three blocks south of Broad). You can't help but peek through closed iron gates into fabulous garden courtyards. Owners are used to admiring eyes, and if you strike up a conversation, you might just get invited for a closer look. It's all part of the special relationship that Charleston has enjoyed with both residents and visitors for centuries.
