Family room focus

Whether warming the room or pleasing the eye, the fireplace in this Nashville home glows year-round.
Winter is always a great time to cozy up to the hearth. But imagine, for a moment, being the fireplace. How would you like to be appreciated for no more than one, maybe two seasons a year?
This Nashville family sought a different approach. At issue was their family room. Situated just beyond the kitchen, this combined dining-and-sitting area functioned as their main space to gather. Therefore, it deserved a special focal point. "Along with our three sons," says one of the homeowners, "we eat all our meals here. The boys do their homework and watch television here. Plus, when we entertain, our guests always gravitate to the comfortable chairs in the sitting area." To give themselves and their friends something unique to gaze upon year-round, the family embarked on a mantel and chimney wall makeover.
From Bland to Distinct
Ten years ago, when the couple added their family room, they settled for a nondescript mantel, which was a decision they grew to regret. Finally they decided to ask Atlanta architect Jim Wilson to design a complete overhaul of their house. Here was their chance to improve the family room as well. Jim's solution was an attractive, two-tier chimney wall of stepped and sloping surfaces constructed from plywood. Highlighting these undulations, handsome . molding was added for effect.
Now flanking the fireplace are low, built-in bookcases that are connected by a simple mantel. These shelves not only balance the chimney wall, but also provide needed storage. "We now have a place to keep all of the children's books," explains one of the homeowners. "It was important that Jim designed the shelves low enough to be easily accessible for the boys." Further balancing the design are two sconces fashioned to resemble old ship lanterns.
Added Touches
Through her selection of colors and fabrics, interior designer Evy McPherson also enhanced this space. By choosing a verdant green for the walls, she made the white mantel and other trim appear more prominent. In keeping with the family's love of the outdoors, she framed the windows with white-and-red cotton fabric drapes depicting safari scenes.
These elements, along with Jim's design, create a family gathering space that can be enjoyed in any season, with the fireplace area as center stage.
