Cosmopolitan living room
Southern Living, Apr 2003 by Hamilton, Majella Chube
Inspired by a family art collection, the interior of this home conveys a new twist on a worldly lifestyle of the past.
Marsha and Randy Simoneaux have a passion for the cosmopolitan lifestyle. In fact, many of the rooms in their suburban Franklin, Tennessee, residence capture the flavor and essence of city life, inspired by scenic renderings hung throughout the interiors.
Representing an array of cultural and historical periods, their art welcomes all with an intriguing invitation to another time and place. "We love street scenes," says Marsha. "They have a richness and an element of history. Each room in our home reflects comfort and culture, created around an elegant yet subdued feel."
Along a living room wall to the left of the piano, a set of four framed panels by Vladimir Jardini replicates a city scene from ancient Greece. A captivating mural, it doubles as the couple's primary inspiration for the room's furnishings and accent pieces.
"This space is our family entertaining area and my favorite place for reading," says Marsha. "I've always loved this setting. It's very inviting because we can see the lake."
With the assistance of Sacramento, California, interior designers Kitt Haman and Michele Simmons, the room has been transformed into a cultured sitting room with a host of neutral tones and textures. While enjoying the room's artistic conversation piece, guests are stimulated by khaki walls combined with ivory, bronze, and brown furnishings, all accented with hints of black.
"Randy is very visual," Marsha explains, "and he likes deep colors and heavy woods. I brought in floral designs and tapestries to lighten and brighten. Combining it all, our home became warm and welcoming."
Re-creating classic Greco-Roman decorating style, the living room is anchored by marble and glass tables with bronze and ebony finishes; sweeping curves on furniture legs, arms, and backs; and ornate inlays. A mahogany baby grand piano, oak floors, and a Persian rug complete the theme.
The home's architectural details wonderfully complement the interior design. "This house has the grandeur and character of Southern style," says Randy. "We love its features, such as the crown molding and arched windows." MAJELLA CHUBE HAMILTON
DECORATING INSPIRED BY ART
* If a piece strikes your fancy, it is likely to be striking in a room. Seek more information about the story it tells, such as the historical period and location, to help you select other items for the space.
* Use colors, depth, and textures apparent in the artwork when choosing the necessary accent pieces.
* Whether originals or reproductions, consider furniture and accessories that reflect the artwork's theme.
