Outside anytime

Southern Living,  Jul 2003  by Doyle, Alice Welsh

A variety of spaces turn the back of this house into an inviting paradise for family fun and entertaining.

Ever wish you could get away from it all without leaving home? For the Baumstark family, that's as easy as stepping out the back door. Wonderful outdoor areas extend off their home's basement level, encouraging relaxation.

The base of the house is wrapped in stacked stone. "It makes the back more substantial and gives it an old-world look," says architect Bill Harrison. "Stone is also cool and has a nice feel in summer." Comfort and style abound, and the outdoor areas serve a variety of functions. "The design works equally well for a kids' get-together around the pool or a Saturday night cocktail party," says interior designer Shane Meder.

Perfecting the Appearance

A room with arched details all around extends out from the stone basement. "It's an ideal transition from inside to outside," notes Bill. "The outdoor room with its ceiling fan also provides a comfortable break from the heat," adds homeowner Donna Baumstark. "We used shades of brown and other warm tones for the floors and the furnishings." Rich brown wicker furniture is comfortably integrated into the room. The neutral palette with touches of terra-cotta and sage green reflects the decor of the downstairs family room. "We stayed away from contrasting colors, so when you step outside, you don't feel like you've gone to another house," says Shane.

Room With a View

From the outdoor room, you step down to a terraced pool area where your eye is drawn to a white gazebo. "The gazebo provides a focal point on that end of the yard," says Donna. "It's also another space for the kids to have lunch and for entertaining." While sitting in the gazebo, guests can enjoy the view of the terraced back of the house and the cascading water.

It's this variety that makes the Baumstarks' house such a pleasure. Whether sitting in the outdoor room or soaking up the sun by the pool, there's a spot for everyone to share in this slice of paradise, located only minutes from metro Atlanta.
