A place for plants
Southern Living, Sep 2003
Think of it as stadium seating for your flowers and ferns. Our Tiered Plant Stand Project has three shelves that step up and back, allowing you to elevate your potted plants for better light and display. Use the stand to fill in a corner of a porch or to add height and interest along a garden path.
We made the example shown 36 inches long, but the length could easily be adjusted to fit a particular space. The piece is about 34 inches high and about 23 inches deep. It will accommodate pots up to about 7 inches in diameter.
Construction is simple. To eliminate the need for ripping, the sides and shelves are made from nominal 1 x 8 boards; the diagonal back braces and the cleats that support the upper shelf are nominal 1 x 2s. (Nominal 1 x 8s measure 3/4 inch x 7 1/4 inches actual; nominal 1 x 2s measure 3/4 inch x 1 1/2 inches actual.)
This is a quick and easy project, even for the beginning woodworker. The only tools needed are a hand saw, a saber saw, a drill, a screwdriver, a tape measure, and a carpenter's square.
Detailed plans (including a materials list and two alternate decorative cuts for the side pieces) and step-by-step instructions for building our Tiered Plant Stand Project are available for $4. To order send a self-addressed, stamped (with two first-class, letter-rate stamps), business-size envelope to Tiered Plant Stand Project, Southern Living Projects, P.O. Box 523, Birmingham, AL 35201. Please enclose a check for $4 payable to Southern Living Projects. Allow six to eight weeks for delivery.
