Fabulous Blue Ridge Fireplaces
Southern Living, Feb 2004
On a frosty evening, there's nothing better than being greeted by the warm glow of a crackling fire. These lodges in the North Carolina mountains stay open all winter and are our favorites to put a spark in the season.
Maximum Firepower at The Grove Park Inn Resort & Spa
You know those big log trucks you see on the highway? They could practically back their loads right into the gaping maws of the two stone fireplaces that face each other in the lobby at this well-known Asheville resort. On a chilly night, guests scoot up their rocking chairs as soon as the fire gets going. By the way, the fireplace to the left as you enter the cavernous lobby is the one most favored-perhaps because it's closer to the bar.
We prefer the rooms in the historic Main Inn. Although smaller than the ones in the two contemporary wings (which are better for families), they come with original solid oak furniture. Plus, it's fun to ride the old-time elevator to your room. Budget tip: Rates drop to $119 from January through March; 1-800-438-5800 or www.groveparkinn.com.
Friendliest at Kelsey & Hutchinson Lodge
Much smaller than The Grove Park Inn's massive grates, the granite fireplace in the lobby at this Highlands lodge still warms the heart and soul. The friendly staff is just what you want-appearing when you need them and disappearing when you don't. That's what makes this inn so sociable. All but 6 of the 33 rooms have either wood-burning or freestanding gas fireplaces. You can't beat the location-a block from the heart of downtown Highlands, where a marvelous variety of boutiques, art galleries, collectors' shops, and clothing stores strut their stuff. One of our favorites is the Mill Creek Store, where you'll find women's clothing and accessories. From December through mid-May, room rates at Kelsey & Hutchinson Lodge begin at $121; 1-888-245-9058 or www.k-hlodge.com.
Best Fireside Dining
The Log Cabin Steak House in Highlands packs them in all year long, but especially in winter. Something magical happens at dinner as flames cast a romantic glow. There are several rooms in this rustic restaurant, and our choice is the small side dining room all the way in the back and to the left. The fireplace adds just the right touch, all the better to enjoy one of their specially prepared rib eyes or filets mignons ($21-$25). Dining here might be the spark you need to warm up a winter evening. Reservations suggested on weekends; (828) 526-3380. (Note: From November 1 through May 1, the restaurant is open for dinner Wednesday through Sunday.)
