Room Revival
Southern Living, May 2004
Inspired additions took this room in an entirely new direction.
If your guestroom needs an overhaul, take a look at what Janie McDonald created. The Little Rock homeowner decided that hers would be more useful as a library and began the task of changing the space from dull bedroom to comfortable study. By concentrating on the room's accessories and making the bookcases a focal point, she transformed this area with simple but effective changes.
Setting the Scene
Janie installed pocket doors fitted with new hardware that instantly gave the space personality. Choosing handles that convey a sense of Country French charm and relaxed sophistication was an easy way to re-establish the room as a study. Crown molding was widened to allow the bookcases to stand out, while a fresh coat of yellow paint applied to the walls gives the room a sunnier feel. The beams and shutters were refinished with a whitewashed effect for a sense of aged charm. The same style of Country French-inspired lampshades that were in the room before its transformation crown the original wrought iron chandelier. Neutral tones on chairs and an ottoman enhance the light and airy feel.
Creative Arrangements
The balanced placement of furniture in the center of the room became the perfect focal point for the oversize frame created by the new pocket doors. The frame illusion is mimicked with Janie's placement of a table in front of the window, which spotlights the beautiful tablescape. Thoughtful placement of items in the bookcases also sets the mood of the room. Janie's positioning of accessories demonstrates how effective arrangements can completely redefine the feel of a room.
Same Space, New Room
The transition from guestroom to study was achieved through choosing furniture and accessories with a clear vision of the room's intended purpose. Careful consideration results in a coherent look. Smaller touches, such as the Country French hardware, create a personality that is carried throughout the room.
