Stay in Southern Style

Southern Living, Jun 2004

Come to this old Mississippi home for magnolia-scented strolls and gracious hospitality.

While most folks dress down for sweet slumber, we Southerners do the exact opposite. Even our bedtime tastes border on the extravagant. That's why travelers looking for antebellum lodging at its best will want to discover Cedar Grove Mansion Inn. Behind its wrought iron gates lie 33 tasteful but ornately furnished rooms, each with its own distinctive flair. Plus, its on-site restaurant finds favor with those desirous of fine dining.

Like a chapter from a great Southern novel (Gone With the Wind to be exact, because several rooms are named for its characters), Cedar Grove charms its guests into taking it easy. Leave the children at home, and come experience one-of-a-kind pampering.

Digs That Delight

Cedar Grove's hotel manager cites the Klein Grand Suite as the most preferred by couples. It includes a canopied queen-size bed, working fireplace, wet bar, and private porch ($190-$205). The Library Suite is also a favorite with guests. Once the actual library of the original owner, John Klein, this room impresses with its dashing spiral staircase and Victorian sitting room ($150-$165).

These aren't the only rooms that will dazzle you. General Lee's Suite comes with an entertainment center and oversize tub ($185-$200). The General Pemberton Room boasts a private patio as well as fireplace ($150-$165). Scarlett's Penthouse Room, though less brazen than the fiery lass herself, sits on the third floor and boasts views of the garden and gazebo ($115-$130). Each room takes on a life all its own.

As do the gardens. Roses, crepe myrtles, and magnolia trees perfume the property this time of year. Small benches are the perfect spots to enjoy the breeze.

When it's time to dine, Andre's at Cedar Grove seasons your evening with Louisiana fare. Tasty entrees include the Creole Catfish ($21) and New Orleans Ribeye ($25). Brandy Bread Pudding ($6) is a sweet way to end an even sweeter day at Cedar Grove Mansion Inn.

Cedar Grove Mansion Inn: 2200 Oak Street, Vicksburg, MS 39180; 1-800-862-1300 or www.cedargrove inn.com. Location: 2 miles north of 1-20. Rates: range $100-$205.
