One Hip Place To Stay
Southern Living, Jul 2004 by Canedo, Vivian
In the heart of Kansas City, Hotel Phillips combines Art Deco design and fabulous food, at affordable rates.
For classy digs, nothing beats Hotel Phillips in downtown Kansas City. Built in 1931, this boutique hotel oozes with Art Deco decor and Gatsbyesque appeal. From the ruby red sofas in the mezzanine to the rich woodwork in the restaurants, you'll feel as though you've stepped onto a page of Fitzgerald's famous novel at this landmark.
Affordable Elegance
Once billed as "A Room and a Bath for Two and Half" ($2.50 that is), Hotel Phillips still delivers style on a budget. Standard rooms start at $119, a fair price for the City of Fountain's downtown. While the rooms aren't quite as opulent as the lobby, which features marble flooring and a gilded statue, they're still a cut above many chains.
In-house Eats
Hotel Phillips also boasts two of the city's most happening restaurants-all just an elevator ride from your room.
Indulge in a divine meal at Phillips ChopHouse (entrees: $16-$38). The restaurant's sober sophistication created by rich wood paneling and the hint of music over the speakers makes you feel as though you're in an exclusive club or an elegant study.
The food and service are equally inspiring. A team of vigilant waiters caters to your every need from the moment you coax escargot from its shell during the first course ($8) to the second you delve into a juicy center-cut fillet as an entree ($30 for 8 ounces). Cap off this dining experience with the restaurant's signature dessert, the ChopHouse Chocolatini-layers of chocolate ganache, dark chocolate brownie, and strawberry slices served in a chic martini glass.
For more casual dining, visit 12 Baltimore Cafe and Bar. Lunch and dinner crowds enjoy salads, sandwiches, and wraps while people-watching through the windows that overlook downtown. Whether you choose to schmooze with the locals or just want to rest your head in a swanky, oldtimey hotel, you'll enjoy a stay at this Kansas City gem. VIVIAN CANEDO
