Clever Tips From a Well-Crafted Kitchen

Fresh design ideas, along with salvaged finds, add life to this space.

Renovating a home can be scary, but Diana and Stewart Hinckley embraced the challenge of a 170-year-old farmhouse. Turning a tight galley kitchen into a full-size family space was one of the easier projects. Pulling it off with vintage charm was the hard part.

The plan involved tearing down a wall to enlarge the space and to make room for a large island. By saving the existing cabinets, the couple had money left for new white marble countertops and commercial-style appliances. Pewter drawer pulls add charm without a huge investment.

Island With a Past

A carpenter was tearing down a shed on the property when he discovered a true find. The small outbuilding was constructed of heart pine, and some pieces were 24 inches wide. he suggested the Hinckleys incorporate the planks into the design of the kitchen. The perfect application was as a countertop on the new island.

The spacious island features storage designed to fit the family's needs. Easily accessible for the Hinckleys' two daughters, the pullout baskets are filled with snacks and cereal.

Diana purchased the light fixture above the island from an old schoolhouse that was being torn down. At only $ 10, the piece adds a vintage accent that's budget-friendly.

Furniture Find

Diana found an old hutch at a local antiques shop. Its original green paint was too much for the room's crisp white backdrop, so she lightly sanded it down to achieve a distressed finish. The piece is a nice counterpoint to the smooth cabinets. JULIE FEAGIN SANDNER
