house plan

Southern Living, Dec 2004

December is one of the busiest times of the year. The last thing on most people's minds is building a home. The holidays, however, are a good time to take stock of your needs.

Margarette Place is a plan that addresses the needs of a busy family. The kitchen lies at the heart of the plan, connected not just to the large family room, but also to the back entry and laundry room through a window-filled breakfast room. For formal entertaining, the dining room is just across a small hall from the kitchen. Two built-in cabinets would be beautiful with glass doors to highlight a collection of family china. The built-ins also frame a nice niche for an antique buffet. A small library with a fireplace makes a cozy spot to enjoy some holiday cheer after a big meal.

Designer Jack Herr has included an outdoor kitchen out back for cooking and entertaining during warmer months. If you don't need one, consider putting a fireplace here to warm the porch year-round.

As a unique twist, the laundry room offers two entrances. One door is just around the corner from the master bedroom and down the hall from the stairs to the bedrooms. The other opens into the family entrance, making it easy to drop off dirty clothes when you come in the back door from working in the garden.

Margarette Place offers two garage options-a detached design for flexibility on a tight lot and a two-car basement option for a sloped site.
