Room for Blooms

Southern Living, Apr 2005 by Sandner, Julie Feagin

This back entrance is more than just a place to drop off keys.

Whether you fancy growing flowers or just like to pick up a bouquet at the store, you want a space like this. It's not only pretty, but it also keeps every tool and container close by in a stylish way.

Strong Roots

Brick floors typically mask dirt, making them popular for back entrances. They also make it easy to wipe up water spills. Given this homeowner's passion for arranging flowers, bricks were a perfect flooring choice.

The countertops share the same durable qualities as the floor; rough-hewn stone tile provides another dirt-masking element. Countertop edges are finished with painted wood trim, softening the look and lending a furniture-like appearance.

Pretty Appointments

This utilitarian room brims with stylish touches such as wallpaper covered with tiny bouquets of flowers and antique garden accessories hanging on the walls. And it's not all for looks: Stacked tin boxes in various sizes turn into great floral containers. Remember, just because something is functional doesn't mean it can't be fun too.

The cabinets feature beaded-board fronts painted creamy white. Extra-deep drawers offer plenty of storage while also allowing vases to stand up, providing quick access to the collection.

Create Your Own Green-Thumb Area

You don't have to devote an entire room to your love of the garden. Carve out a space in the garage or even on a covered porch.

Hit garage sales or thrift stores for an old table to serve as a workspace and for other garden-inspired elements. Keep clippers, vases, and essential tools together in a basket or colorful tin bucket.

A little creativity can turn an empty corner into a garden lover's delight.
