Downtown Dining
Southern Living, May 2005
Try these fabulous restaurants for a true taste of Kentucky.
One of the most delightful surprises about Lexington, Kentucky, involves the fantastic selection of fine restaurants-many of them located right downtown. Here are our suggestions for some winning Bluegrass cuisine.
Anna Belle's Bistro
You can't go wrong with Anna Belle's fabulous Chopped PLT Salad, which features lettuce, tomatoes, pancetta, and blue cheese, mixed with chopped red onion and a warm sherry vinaigrette ($7). Try the 14-ounce New York strip covered in blue cheese gravy ($29) if you require hearty fare, and by all means, enjoy their delicious crème brûlée ($6.50) for dessert. 127 North Limestone Street; (859) 381-0900 or www.annabellesbistro.com.
The Greentree Tearoom
Step out of the bustling crowd, and enter this light green house for a spot of tea. Five delightful courses include tea, soup, appetizer, exquisite breads, dainty sandwiches, and scrumptious sweets ($18.95). The menu changes monthly and proves so popular that reservations are required. 527 West Short Street; (859) 455-9660 or www.greentreetearoom.com.
Le Deauville
Discover European ambience right here in the Bluegrass at this fine restaurant. The French Onion soup ($6.50) and the escargots baked in butter ($8.50) are works of art. And don't pass up the profiteroles ($8). Vanilla ice cream in a pastry covered in chocolate sauce will have you speaking French before your plate is empty. 199 North Limestone Street; (859) 246-0999.
Metropol
What began as a Lexington post office in 1825 now features some of the best cuisine in the city. Don't miss the lobster lasagna ($23). The large, tender square nestles in a sun-dried tomato-basil cream sauce and literally melts on the tongue. If you're in a salad frame of mind, go for the endive salad ($7), which includes Belgian endive, wild greens, red onion, and spiced walnuts with Gorgonzola dressing. 307 West Short Street; (859) 381-9493.
