Road Map For Shopping

Southern Living, Jul 2005

Georgetown caters to visitors with a new home-furnishings guide.

For shoppers, especially those looking to furnish a home, this tony D.C. neighborhood might just be nirvana.

Georgetown boasts some 500 businesses, including more than 60 home-furnishings stores. In fact, the area now touts itself as "The New Center of Design."

This is not just baseless braggadocio either. Retailers include exclusive antiques stores, furniture showrooms, and interior design studios, as well as national chains such as Restoration Hardware and Pottery Barn. All are located within a five-block radius of the intersection of M Street and Wisconsin Avenue, the epicenter of Georgetown's bustling commercial district.

Exploring the area's shops can be mind-boggling, especially for first-time visitors. So the Georgetown Business Improvement District published a 24-page brochure that lists all of the neighborhood's home-furnishings stores, their hours, and their product lines.

In addition to the alphabetical listing, the shops are also cross-referenced by category and by manufacturer. A four-color foldout map highlighting general store locations, the visitors center, and nearby parking facilities adds to the brochure's usefulness.

For a free copy of the brochure, call (202) 333-1600, or stop by the Georgetown Visitors Center at 3242 M Street.
