Hello Sunshine
Southern Living, Jul 2005
Decorative tiles spark the theme for this splashy bath.
There's nothing like the real thing, but this tiny, windowless bath in New Orleans challenges that notion. Who needs authentic rays of sunshine in a room this bright?
The room's sunny disposition comes courtesy of a mix of decorative and field tiles, installed from floor to ceiling. Floor tiles in an orange hue are mixed with white ones to create the effect of a rug. In shades of bold tangerine and sunflower yellow, and laid in vertical stripes, the field tiles on the wall provide a delicious background for the sunshine-themed tiles that circle the perimeter of the room.
Homeowner Debbie Rees and designer Gayle Adams found the colorful tiles at a floor coverings trade show. One of the first items they spotted, the tiles immediately caught their interest. They continued browsing, but hundreds of products later, Debbie and Gayle were still sold on the sensational tiles imported from France.
Even the room's fluffy, white towels couldn't escape the sun's rays. Debbie took them to a monogram shop and had a shades-wearing sun sewn on each. This final touch, while inexpensive, adds to the room's celestial charm.
