On the Town in Buckhead
Southern Living, Sep 2005 by Thompson, Annette
Atlanta's most fashionable neighborhood fairly shouts with shopping and dining. Come indulge in some of the best.
Uptown and swanky, Buckhead is Atlanta's toniest address. It's the finest place in the Peach State for shopping and dining and creates a fun place for a weekend jaunt.
Make the Most of Friday
Check-in typically starts at 3 p.m. at the Sheraton Buckhead hotel Atlanta across from Lenox Square and Phipps Plaza, as well as at the Hampton Inn on Piedmont. Both are well-run hotels with some of the lowest rates in the district. At the Sheraton, opt for the pricier club floor for the quietest and most luxurious rooms (from $119-$139 regular rates-plus $15 per day parking). The Hampton Inn Buckhead resides a bit more out of the way on Piedmont Road (from $ 139, free parking). It sits adjacent to Aveda Institute Atlanta, a training center that offers discounted spa treatments by students ([404] 649-7119).
Drop in Lenox Square and Phipps Plaza. From a Tiffany's at Phipps to the huge Macy's at Lenox, the malls boast more than 340 stores offering a concentrated shopping experience.
Spice it up tonight at Nava. This gorgeous restaurant at the corner of West Paces Ferry Road and Peachtree Road feels as if it's been lifted right out of New Mexico. Start with the barbecued rabbit tostada ($8.95). Afterward, slip into Sambuca at 3102 Piedmont Road for after-dinner drinks accompanied by smooth music to form the perfect lullaby to end a Friday night.
A Saturday Shopper's Paradise
Start the day at the Corner Café, which features dishes such as frittatas, omelets, and waffles ($10-$12), as well as fresh baked pastries (from $2).
Two local streets focus on home decor-you could spend a week exploring the varieties of both. Bennett Street and Miami Circle host dozens of upscale antiques dealers, art galleries, lighting emporiums, and decor shops. The shopkeepers are knowledgeable and friendly.
Enjoy the easygoing Eclipse di Luna on Miami Circle for lunch. Order a feast of many dishes or only one or two from the tapas menu. The empanada with artichoke hearts and pepper sauce ($3.50) tastily satisfies.
Spend this afternoon in the specialty spots along Peachtree Road. At the Peachtree Battle Shopping Center, go to Richards Variety Store, an upscale five-and-ten that stocks classic toys. Over at Cocktail Hour, you'll find divine barware for parties.
There are plenty of guy shops spread through Buckhead too. Drop in Distant Replays on East Paces Ferry Road for paraphernalia of retro sports teams. Orvis Atlanta at the corner of Peachtree and Piedmont caters to those seeking outdoor gear.
At dinner opt for the contemporary white dining room at Aria. The entrées tempt with memorable flavors-tender short ribs ($25) and duck breast ($27)-but we love the appetizers so we recommend them with a dessert. The warm lobster cocktail ($ 19) pairs well with the arugula and blue cheese salad ($10). Add a serving of warm chocolate cheesecake for two ($7), and achieve bliss.
Soothing Sunday Sojourns
Kick off your Sunday at The Buckhead Diner. On the outside it's all silvery and neon, and inside, fabulous service accompanies great meals. Try the delicate crab Benedict over steamed asparagus ($ 15) for a satisfying brunch.
This afternoon, take a peek at the city's storied past at the Atlanta History Center ($12 adults, $10 seniors and college students, $7 ages 4-12). You'll see exhibits on its role in the Civil War and view a fine display of Georgia folk art. The Swan House, an Italianate mansion dating to the 1920s, is open for guided tours that show off the immaculate restorations.
A walk in the gardens makes a lush ending to a glorious stay. Check out the Atlanta Botanical Garden just south of Buckhead in Midtown. The orchid collection alone makes it worth your efforts. Like the rest of Buckhead, these gorgeous blooms entertain in grand style. ANNETTE THOMPSON
