house plan

Southern Living,  Sep 2005  by Stratton, Ann E

Inspired by Lowcountry style, this cozy cottage is modest in size but big on charm. In the center of the plan stands a generous family room with easy access to the master bedroom, kitchen, and porches. On cool fall evenings, admire the colorful foliage from a front porch swing or relax on the screened porch after a day's work. A generous wall of windows across the back of the house allows in plenty of natural light.

Upstairs, two bedrooms each have their own full bath. A sitting room separates the two. This space could also easily become a home library or media room.

The plan boasts wonderful details, including double closets in the master bedroom and a large kitchen island for the talented Southern cook. ANN E. STRATTON

Personalize This Plan

Your builder or architect can help you customize a Southern Living plan. Here are a few suggestions for this house.

1. Transform the small office off the mudroom into a flower-potting station.

2. Add a second set of French doors leading from the family room to the porch.

3. Give the master bedroom an entry to the back porch.

4. Enlarge the dining room with a box bay window.

5. Turn the walls dividing the dining room from the foyer into double-sided bookcases to give multipurpose flair.

6. Brighten the upstairs bedrooms by adding an extra window in both.

7. Add built-ins to the upstairs sitting room, and create the perfect space for electronic equipment.
