Hot Tunes, Hot Coffee
Southern Living, Apr 2006 by Thompson, Annette
Check out this unique shop that sets a new tone for Greenville, South Carolina's renaissance.
It's a coffee shop and a record store. It's a place to burn CDs and download to your MP3 player. It's a tribute to the Rolling Stones and a casbah. Earshot, one of Greenville, South Carolina's newest spots, has flipped the idea of a music store upside down. This emporium of sound creates a comfy atmosphere to appreciate a latte while you pick out your favorite songs.
Sipping and Sampling
Step into Earshot, and you'll think you're in Morocco. "We couldn't be the traditional hole-in-the-wall record store anymore. It has to be an experience," says Jack Dennis, who co-owns the store with his brother, Jason. A circular settee, called The Blender (it's where you sit to sample and download), acts as Earshot's centerpiece.
A bar at one end serves coffee, wine, and beer, as well as baked goods: muffins, cheesecake, and cakes ($1.75-$4.50).On; Friday nights, a DJ plays an eclectic mix, ranging from jazz to hip-hop.
Burn, Baby, Burn
When you're ready to try the Mix & Burn technology, take a seat at The Blender. After selecting your songs, arrange them in the order you like, and then pick up your CD at check-out. The first five songs cost $9.99, and each additional one is 99 cents.
If you prefer your sounds on an MP3 player, Earshot accommodates too. Simply plug it into the monitor.
Before leaving, take a look at the photo of Keith Richards and the text posted beside it: "In 2005 Earshot felt the need to inspire Greenville. Taking our cue from the Stones, we're bringing Morocco to you. Look around...Inspiration is all around you. What you bring back is your own." -ANNETTE THOMPSON
