Give Guests a Sweet Retreat

Southern Living,  Apr 2006  by Mercer, Amy Bickers

Let the pale hues and charming details of this light pink space inspire your guest room decor.

Visitors to this home often exclaim over their enchanting upstairs retreat. Words such as "soft," "serene," and "heavenly" punctuate the air.

If you want to elicit the same reaction from your houseguests, follow the lead of Missouri homeowner Corinne Jones. Corinne, an interior designer, used her expert knowledge to pull together a soothing, stylish space.

Light and Lovely

A pink-on-white-print wallpaper from Nina Campbell sets the color scheme for the room. The small print adds interest without being too busy.

The high window eaves are dressed in Roman shades. This simple treatment is a great choice for small windows. The fabric echoes the pink and white on the walls and introduces shades of green, blue, and yellow.

Balancing Act

A pair of twin beds works just as well in a guest room as in a child's room. They also give a guest space more versatility than a queen- or king-size bed because visitors can share the room without having to share a bed.

The twin beds, with matching prints above each upholstered headboard, balance the space. The room's painted furniture pieces add an element of softness.

Elegant Extras

Every bedroom should have a place to sit other than the bed so there is a spot to rest, even if a person is not ready to sleep. A cozy chair, positioned below the window, is great for daytime reading. Don't make your visitors live out of their suitcases; a dresser is a must. Also include a bedside table and lamp. Plush bedding will complete your heavenly getaway.
