At Home With Ideas

Southern Living,  Apr 2006

A beautiful footed glass container such as the Devonshire Lidded Trifle lets you serve yummy desserts in high style. The wide opening of this heavy glass compote also allows you to do a little indoor gardening. Measuring 8 inches in diameter and 13 inches tall, the antique-inspired design easily holds an assortment of small plants. Follow these tips, and have fun creating a miniature landscape for your tabletop.

Fill the bottom of the glass container with about an inch of gravel; follow this layer with a sprinkling of crushed aquarium charcoal. (You'll find both of these items at a pet store.) Then add moist potting soil. Remove plants from their pots, and loosen the roots with your fingers. Position plants snugly; then add a layer of green sheet moss or more gravel. Place the container where the plants will receive diffused light. Be careful not to overwater; a kitchen baster is helpful for adding small amounts of moisture when soil is dry.

The following plants work well in small container gardens such as this one: rex begonias, peperomias, 'Petite' peace lilies, ferns, baby's tears, and succulents.
