Bold Style With Tile

Southern Living,  May 2006  by Mercer, Amy Bickers

A playful design on the walls makes this sleek master bath stand out from all the rest.

Water isn't the only thing flowing in this master bath. Color undulates through the space, with waves of green splashing onto a sea of white.

The contemporary space is tucked into a Washington, D.C., town house where space is at a premium. During the remodel, homeowners Susan Courtney and Brett Bobley chose to devote ample square footage to a walk-in closet immediately outside the room. This left a long, rectangular space for the bath.

Landis Construction handled the project, giving Susan and Brett ideas that are hardworking and good-looking.

Cool Pops of Color

The room's most striking feature is the undulating design of glass mosaic tile installed against Thassos marble on the walls. Thassos is a snow white marble that takes its name from the Greek island on which it is quarried. Glass mosaic tile and stone have different thicknesses, so installing the curving pattern was a challenge for the tile setter.

Susan and Brett opted for a walk-in shower rather than a tub. The glass doors are frameless so the two areas of the bath merge seamlessly. Inside the shower, green tile adds polka-dotinspired color.

A New Angle

An Italian, double-bowl vanity and sleek mirrored medicine cabinets give a quasi-industrial look to the sinks and fixtures. Green glass tile shadows the silhouette of the sinks and mirrors.

Blocks at Play

Most of the walls are interior so there was space for a window only at one end of the shower. This left the dilemma of privacy. The solution: a wall of glass blocks. "I love the shower and the glass-brick window," Susan says. "I think that the bath is attractive and comfortable; it makes great use of a fairly small space."
