Walk In and Be Wowed

Southern Living,  Aug 2006  by Doyle, Alice Welsh

It may have started out drab, but now this living room looks fresh and fab to everyone.

If a radiator is the first thing you see in a living room, the space doesn't feel inviting. But Debbe and Steve Peck bought their house for the location: a beautiful, quiet street near their daughter's school. The house itself was in dire need of help. The Pecks worked with Richmond, Virginia, architect Jay Hugo to replace the radiators with new cast-iron models and to bring distinguishing details to their dated front room.

New Doors Work Wonders

Enlarging the front opening of the house allowed a new oak door to be more centered in the room. Windows on both sides bring in light. For a nearby landing, the banister was replaced by a half wall with Arts and Crafts detailing that's more in line with the rest of the house. A French door on the landing invites in more light from the porch.

Mantel Makeover

The Pecks decided to close in the wall next to the fireplace and install built-in bookcases instead. The updated mantel with a slate surround gives the sitting area much-needed appeal. Classic furnishings finish the room's look. A long bench is used as a coffee table.

Now the room features great design-and no big radiators. -ALICE WELSH DOYLE
