Take a Stroll Through The Speed
Southern Living, Aug 2006
Whether you're a fan of paintings, sculptures, tapestries, or just a great lunch, spend a day enjoying this Kentucky landmark.
You don't have to move fast to enjoy The Speed Art Museum. Step into this beautiful place in Louisville, Kentucky, and you'll be surrounded by a myriad of colors and textures. Take your time; immerse yourself in the artwork that fills this Bluegrass version of the Louvre. Nine main galleries beckon, but here are a few sights to see while you're there. And bring your appetite too-there's a great spot to satisfy your hunger pangs.
Art and More
The museum offers a terrific show through September 3 dedicated to a native son. "Sam Gilliam: A Retrospective" contains an exhibit of works by this African American painter who began his career in Louisville. If you like early-American art, don't miss "Forging an American Identity: The Art of William Ranney," which runs September 29-January 1, 2007. Sixty works depict events in the lives of important figures such as George Washington and Daniel Boone.
Before you view the permanent collection, pick up the free audio guide that gives you great music, sound effects, and interviews to complement and explain 40 different works. Or take advantage of one of the tours offered on the weekend.
Gustatory Gallery
Stop in at Café Bristol (right next to the Sculpture Court) for a wonderful sandwich or salad. If you're really hungry, try their delectable Grilled Cheese Florentine, which features spinach, mushrooms, and Havarti cheese ($6.95). They also serve a picture-perfect cheesecake ($3.50).
