Feel-good Flowers
Southern Living, Sep 2006 by Riley, Ellen Ruoff
This easy arrangement will give you something to smile about.
Happiness comes in many ways. On a good day, 10 minutes and a few dollars' worth of flowers will get you there. The secrets to success are choosing only two types of blooms and keeping the arrangement simple.
Flowers don't have to be massive to make a big impact. A little arrangement such as this one can go many places. Besides hanging it on a door, you could also place it on a windowsill, set it in the center of a table, or enjoy it as an accessory on a mantel. The point is: Keep it small and uncomplicated so you can enjoy flowers every day.

Flowers...and How
* How is it put together? Line a small wooden box (we used an old cheese box) with plastic wrap, and fill it with moist florist foam. Run a row of small sunflowers down the back of the box, and fill in the front with Mexican sunflowers (Tithonia rotund/folia). Hang the box on a little nail tapped into the door. If your container doesn't have a hole in the back, drill one.
* How long does it last? Expect the blooms to remain fresh for several days-as long as you add water to the florist foam daily. For longer life, skip the foam, and insert containers such as paper cups or small jelly or baby food jars into the box to hold the water instead. Both types of sunflowers prefer the containers to the florist foam. However, consider the location of your arrangement. If you're hanging it on a door, go with the florist foam; water tends to slosh out of the small jars every time the door is opened. Unfortunately, I learned this the hard way.
* How much does it cost? These September flowers are plentiful at farmers markets and roadside stands. You may also find good deals at grocery and discount stores. The sunflowers cost about $1 each, and the Mexican sunflowers were about 50 cents each.
left: If you're in and out a lot, put flowers on the door to welcome you home each time you pass through. above: Place your arrangement where you can enjoy both sides of the blooms. Sunflowers are just as lovely when viewed from behind as they are straight on.
