Trails and Treetops
Southern Living, Sep 2006
There's no place like Bernheim, where 14,000 acres grow with enough plants to please the pickiest gardener and where anyone can bask in the glory of fall.
When you're ready to walk headlong into the season, the perfect place awaits. Imagine traipsing among treetops along a bridge-style walkway 75 feet above the ground. This is just one of the many new attractions at Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest, south of Louisville, Kentucky. Nature puts on quite a show here.
Come check out the wonderful ways to celebrate the changing seasons in this 14,000-acre natural setting.
Walking the Walks
Just opened this past spring, the 180-foot-long Canopy Tree Walk may look more like a fishing pier when you first see it, but it takes you right into the tops of oak, hickory, and beech trees-a full six stories above the ground. You'll be surprised at the bird activity and fabulous view.
A couple of new trails add to the 35 miles of pathways in the nature preserve. Knob Top Trail takes you from the Visitor Center (another new attraction) to the Lake Nevin Loop (also new), where you can try your hand at fishing or just enjoy exploring the plant collections and habitats. Another great walk takes place at Two Ponds Loop that begins and ends at the Visitor Center.
Load up a picnic basket, grab the dog, and spend the day relaxing at Bernheim. It's a breathe-deep kind of place, a perfect spot to welcome fall.
