Water Smarts

Southern Living,  Jun 2007

Nothing beats the summer heat like a tall glass of icecold H2O. Make sure your family gets quality refreshment by using a filtration system to cut out all the potential contaminants such as lead, arsenic, and bacteria or just to improve the flavor and appearance.

A LITTLE DIY

For faster flow and longer periods between filter changes, opt for an under-sink filter. The water flows through a separate faucet (it can take the place of a soap dispenser or a spray nozzle you never use). If you're handy, this is a simple project. The directions that come with the kit are easy to follow. If you're nervous, have a plumber install it. The filter will last up to six months before it needs replacing. Cost: about $88; replacement filter is about $15.

ALWAYS ON TAP

A faucet-mounted filter replaces or goes over your aerator (you can even buy one for your shower). Installation is fast. Typically, there is a switch to turn on the filter so you only get filtered water when you want it. Expect filtered water to have a slower flow rate, especially if you have low water pressure. That's why this is our least favorite option. The time between filter replacements varies depending on use. Cost: about $30-$40; two replacement filters are about $30.

DID YOU KNOW?

You shouldn't use hot water from your faucet for cooking or drinking if your pipes are lead or if they are connected with lead solder (an alloy used to join metal pipes). Turn on the tap, and let the water run until it's cold.

PITCHER PERFECT

For ease of use, affordability, and no installation, a filter pitcher is the best bet. Simply fill it up, and store it in the refrigerator to have cold filtered water on hand. This is also a great way to gauge how much water you're drinking each day. Fill up your pitcher in the morning with the equivalent of eight 8-ounce glasses, and make it a goal to finish off the pitcher by nightfall. The filter will need to be replaced every two or three months. Cost: about $30; three replacement filters are about $20.
