Chill Out on Cherry Street

Southern Living,  Sep 2007  by Lingo, Karen

You won't find this area on a Tulsa street map, but getting there is as easy as pie.

Shop, dine, and listen to a little night music in Tulsa's Cherry Street Historic District. Take Peoría Avenue north from 1-44 (or south from downtown), turn east on 15th Street, and look for the distinctive street signs.

To Market

Saturday mornings through October, catch the farmers market (7-11 a.m.) at the corner of 15th Street and Peoría for everything from fresh produce to baked goods.

Stop and Shop

Accessorize at Deco to Disco Vintage ([918] 592-2070). Look for Bakelite jewelry from the 1930s and 1940s, and clothing from the 1920s to the 1980s. Pet Annie, the house cat, while you browse the antiques in The Antiquary ([918] 582-2897). At La Donna's Fancy Foods ([918] 582-1523), load up on gourmet Callebaut chocolate.

Another mile down 15th Street turn between Cherry Street Stained Glass Company ([918] 743-3433) and The Bead Merchant ([918] 747-3636) to reach the entrance to Mama Trizza's Pottery Shop ([918] 743-7687). Ask Leonard Krisman about the 55 artists whose work he carries, including Nigerian-born Yusuf Etudaiye.

Daybreak Till Full Moon

Grab a pastry at Cherry Street Daylight Donuts ([918] 585-1796), open 5-11 a.m. Monday-Saturday. Or have a French Press ($4) at The Coffee House ([918] 779-6137).

For lunch we like Kilkenny's Irish Pub and Eatery ([918] 582-8282). We recommend the fish and chips ($11) or Bangers and Mash (sausages and potatoes, $8).

End the day at The Full Moon Cafe ([918] 583-6666). Go Thursday through Saturday, when pianists Torn Basler and Brian Lee face each other in a musical duel ($5 cover). -KAREN LINGO
